How to Keep Kids' Teeth Healthy Over the Holidays

Girl in piggytails laying on grassSchool holidays are a chance to recharge, play, travel, and break from the usual routines, but your child’s teeth still need daily attention. Without the structure of the school week, brushing and flossing routines can easily fall by the wayside. With all the holiday snacks and new adventures, young mouths can be exposed to more sugar, stress, and risk than usual.

That doesn’t mean holiday smiles have to suffer. A few small reminders and clever habits could go a long way in keeping those pearly whites healthy while the kids are off school.

Holidays Routines May Change, Keep Brushing on Their Minds

“During the school term, kids brush as part of their morning and night routine,” says the ADA’s Dr Chris Sanzaro. “But in the holidays, things are less structured, so brushing often gets skipped.”

Try setting a rule like “no play until teeth are clean.” Whether it’s tech time, outside fun or breakfast, brushing should come first. Sticking a gentle reminder on the bathroom mirror or fridge can be part of the fun, not a nag.

Pack Smart: Oral Care on the Go

Travelling or spending long days out? A mini kit with a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and floss can be a lifesaver. Whether at the beach or the airport, brushing after meals helps freshen your breath and cut back on cavity-causing bacteria, especially when snacking is frequent.

For kids involved in sports or thrill-seeking activities, consider a properly fitted dental mouthguard. It offers a better fit and more protection than off-the-shelf versions, helping avoid cracked or damaged teeth after a knock.

Avoiding the Sugar Trap

Holiday foods tend to be sugary, sticky, or tough on teeth – think ice blocks, soft drinks, lollies, and hard bread crusts. Encourage kids to sip water between sugary or acidic treats. It helps rinse away residue and keeps the mouth hydrated, which is especially helpful when routines and food choices shift.
