What Kids Should Be Eating and Drinking for Stronger Teeth

Nutrition Tips for Your Child's SmileBrushing matters, but so does what ends up on your child’s plate. The reassuring part is that tooth-friendly eating doesn’t need to be complicated, expensive, or restrictive. A handful of small habits go a long way over time.

Good nutrition and good oral health go hand in hand – here’s how small changes at mealtime can support your child’s smile.

Snacks That Work in Your Teeth’s Favour

Fresh fruit, raw vegetables, cheese and plain (or lower-sugar) yoghurt all make solid everyday choices. It’s worth a quick label check on packaged snacks and yoghurts too, since products marketed for kids can carry more added sugar than you’d expect.

Keeping a few of these options pre-cut in the fridge makes reaching for them just as easy as grabbing something packaged, which matters most on busy afternoons when convenience usually wins.

What Should They Be Drinking?

Tap water is the best everyday drink once it’s age-appropriate, and it’s worth encouraging between meals and snacks rather than reaching for something sweet. Babies do best with breastmilk or infant formula, with cow’s milk generally introduced from around 12 months.

Juice, even the varieties marketed as “no added sugar,” is best kept occasional rather than a daily staple. Building the habit of water first starts early and tends to stick.

Treats Still Have Room in the Picture

Sweets aren’t the enemy here (an occasional treat is part of a normal childhood), but they work best as just that: occasional. Sticky snacks deserve a little extra caution, since they cling to teeth longer than most other foods.

If brushing right after isn’t practical, a quick rinse with water helps clear away some of that leftover sugar in the meantime.
